In the mining industry, special mine cables are used to supply electricity to mechanized installations, mobile machines, and remote control systems during the extraction of minerals, both in open‑pit mines and underground. These cables are designed to operate in extreme conditions: high humidity and contact with water, the presence of dust, tensile and impact mechanical loads, as well as exposure to aggressive gases.
Types of cables for the mining industry:
Flexible cables are designed for voltages of 360–1140 V and are used to connect electrical equipment at industrial facilities.
High‑flexibility cables are used to connect drilling rigs, lighting systems, and alarm systems where high mobility of the wiring is required.
Armored cables are designed for voltages of 1–6 kV and are used in high‑power mining installations and on sites where enhanced protection of the conductors is required.
Examples of cable grades for the mining industry:
KGEShM is a power cable for connecting coal harvesters, mobile mining machines, and mechanisms to a 1140 V alternating voltage network on the main conductors and 380 V on the auxiliary conductors. It is designed for use in mines and rooms with high humidity.
KSHVEBShv is a power cable designed for stationary installation in horizontal and inclined mine workings, rated for a nominal voltage of 1.14 kV and a frequency of 50 Hz on the main conductors.
KGES is a cable for drive chains of electrified trolleys in mines; it is resistant to high humidity, condensation, and moisture ingress on the sheath at temperatures up to +55°C.
Basic requirements
In Russia, cables for the mining industry must comply with GOST 31945 2012, which regulates the parameters, properties and requirements for manufacturing, testing and operation.
Key performance characteristics:
Resistance to mechanical influences: bending, torsion, stretching.
Resistance to extreme temperatures, ozone, oils, acids and electrolytes.
For models with reinforced core or reinforcing harnesses — breaking load resistance up to 490 N (0.5 tons).
UV resistance.
Tolerance to aggressive chemicals: fatty acids, alkalis, industrial lubricants and oils.
Cables for underground mobile vehicles should not support burning when laid alone.
